The small town of Sheregesh is well known as a ski resort among Siberian skiers and snowboarders, but fairly unknown outside of Russia. In fact, even in Russia it only became popular recently, previously only being famous for its Guinness World Record for the largest swimwear parade on skis. But scantily clad skiers are not the main attraction of Sheregesh, as this region has a unique micro-climate bringing several meters of powder snow from early November through to May. At the beginning of winter it often snows every single day, which guarantees perfect powder skiing just a few meters from the ski lifts. Skiing is mostly in the tree-line and some short-walk skitouring and backcountry routes are recommended on good weather days. There are some interesting summits around, easily accessed by skitouring or splitboarding. Today Sheregesh offers 3 gondolas, 6 high-speed chairlifts and a number of T-bars. The top of Mount Zelenaya is 1270m and the vertical drop is about 600 meters.

For accommodation, there is a good choice of modern hotels, as well as more simple bed & breakfast options. Entertainment and leisure facilities include banyas (saunas), night clubs and a local market where you can purchase regional produce such as pine nuts, honey and other souvenirs. Overall, Sheregesh is an excellent place to spend a week skiing at the beginning of winter.

Main reasons to go there: Early season powder skiing and boarding from ski lifts. Plus, freeriding in Sheregesh can be combined with skitouring in Luzhba.
